The goal of the Virtual Centre and its latest tranche, now called VC touchdown, is to operate a single airspace from two different area control centres (ACCs), using a central service point (One Data Centre) to provide information and functions. Technically speaking we had to become “locationindependent”. This has meant a significant and innovative change to our IT infrastructure to secure the technical foundations. We established a service-oriented infrastructure (SOI) framework for our CRYSTAL local traffic complexity and prediction tool to demonstrate how this would work while providing us with the ability to gather operational experience and lessons learnt for the next steps of the programme.
