Similarities

Skyguide eSports Challenge

Skyguide eSports Challenge

What does it take to be a good Air Traffic Controller?
And what does it take to be a good esports athlete?

Interestingly, the two worlds are pretty close in relation to the required skill set.

  • Precision
  • Teamwork
  • Concentration
  • Quick Thinking

But can they excel in each other’s fields? That’s what we set out to find out.

Level 1
The Similarities

To find the similarities between esports athletes and ATCOs, we brought them together at the esports venue Explorit in Yverdon.

Two players from the Swiss esports organisation Noëtic met with two Skyguide employees to talk about their respective fields.

Is our theory correct? Does the skill set of an esports athlete overlap with the skill set of a Skyguide ATCO?

Level 2
Esports Athletes as ATCOs

The athletes of the Swiss esports organisation mYinsanity know the ins and outs of their games. How quickly will they grasp the concepts of an ATCOs day job?

We wanted to find out and brought them to our Tower Simulator at Skyguide Wangen. After a quick introduction from Skyguide employees, they had to prove their quick wits, concentration and precision.

Skyguide live at Herofest 2022

Our Skyguide eSports team was a featured guest in the eSports.ch live stream at last year’s Hero Fest in Bern. Kevin Banz and Tobias Suter talked about their experiences during the Skyguide eSports Challenge with professional eSports athletes.
In the interview, they also emphasised the similarities between an air traffic controller and eSports athlete and talked about ways to get more young people interested in this profession.
