Air traffic controllers

Each day, thousands of aircraft are in the air, carrying millions of passengers across the globe. To make sure that these aircraft can take off, fly and land safely around the world, air traffic controllers (ATCOs) provide crucial air navigation services.

In Swiss airspace alone, air traffic controllers manage around 1.3 million flights each year, working around the clock to ensure safe and efficient air traffic flow. Their role is to oversee all flights within their sector 24/7, staying in constant communication with pilots, colleagues, and counterparts in neighbouring regions.

Using radar screens and other technologies, air traffic controllers track each aircraft’s heading, speed, altitude, and position. They ensure that the required separation between planes is maintained by giving pilots clear instructions to adjust their course, speed, or altitude when needed.

Our air traffic controllers operate from various locations, including control towers, approach and departure control, area control centres for en-route air traffic or in the air defence and direction centres.
